At 80, the UN confronts crises in Ukraine, Gaza, and great-power rivalry. Can supranational governance replace sovereignty, or will fragmentation deepen as global tensions escalate?

In the past, although NATO bombed Yugoslavia and the United States and multinational forces attacked Iraq, these events could barely be considered to have been carried out under the framework of the United Nations. More importantly, the military operations initiated by both the United States and NATO did not formally occupy the territories of other countries, so they could still be considered to be „peacekeeping.“ However, the Russia-Ukraine war that broke out on February 24, 2022, in which the Russian army blatantly launched an invasion of a UN member state and openly occupied Ukrainian territory, this blatant challenge to the UN Charter has actually fundamentally shaken the foundations of the United Nations. Of course, there are reasons for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine violated the agreement and deployed missiles targeting Russia first, and Russia launched special military operations afterwards. However, Russia’s attack on Ukraine is a violation of the UN Charter that cannot be denied. In fact, this also reflects that the United Nations cannot play its due role in the game between major powers. For example, the United Nations did not stop NATO’s eastward expansion. In addition, in 2014, Europe and the United States blatantly violated the Minsk Agreement, armed Ukraine, and instigated Ukraine to launch brutal operations against the Russians in Donbass in eastern Ukraine. The United Nations did not stop these actions. Therefore, when the United Nations has failed to effectively prevent NATO’s eastward expansion and has failed to prevent Europe and the United States from violating the Minsk Agreement, it is actually unreasonable to simply criticize Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In addition to the Russia-Ukraine war, the escalating Palestinian-Israeli conflict is also an important sign that the United Nations order is beginning to collapse. Read more

Der weltweite Boss der Investmentbank HSBC, Mark Tucker, möchte kein Neptunist sein. Also sagt er in der Financial Times das, was derzeit alle sagen: Trumps Zollpolitik sei gefährlich und die Globalisierung beendet: Die Globalisierung, wie wir sie kennen, ist ihren Lauf zu Ende gelaufen. “

Damit übernimmt er fast wörtlich das, was beim Wirtschaftsforum in Davos von zwei Barclays Analysten auch schon gesagt wurde: Die Projektionen für den afrikanischen Markt sind beträchtlich: Das kombinierte BIP soll einer Weltbank-Studie zufolge bis 2035 sieben Billionen US-Dollar und bis 2050 29 Billionen US-Dollar erreichen. Wenn die Ziele der AfCFTA vollständig umgesetzt werden, könnten bis 2035 50 Millionen Menschen der extremen Armut entkommen, heißt es in der Prognose. “

Richtig ist: Trump versucht, mit seiner Zollpolitik die Spielregeln zu verändern. America First ist ein Anschlag auf die Idee des Freihandels.Aber genauso richtig ist: Das globale Interesse am Austausch von Waren und Dienstleistungen, dem Anlocken von Investitionskapital und damit der gemeinsamen Entwicklung von Prosperität ist so übermächtig, dass auch der amerikanische Präsident es nicht beenden kann. Die Weltwirtschaft wird in 2025 nach den Prognosen des IWF um 3,3 Prozent wachsen, das heißt, am Ende des Jahres um fast 3,7 Billionen Dollar reicher geworden sein.Dieser Unterschied ist wichtig: Die US-Wähler haben mehrheitlich Trump gewählt. Die Welt hat es mehrheitlich nicht getan. Die Barclays-Analysten und der HSBC-Boss – der jetzt auf einer Investorentagung in Hongkong sprach – sollten sich von den Ankündigungen aus dem Weißen Haus nicht ins Bockshorn jagen lassen.Hier sind fünf Fakten, die ihm und allen anderen, die verunsichert sind, Orientierung bieten können:1. Sollte der Anteil in 2025 weiter sinken, dann wird das in Wolfsburg, München und Stuttgart nicht als Sicherheitsmaßnahme, sondern als Gefahr gesehen. Mittlerweile sind die Chinesen auch nicht nur Produktionsstandort und Käufer deutscher Fabrikate, sondern sind mit zwei Firmen und zusammen fast 20 Prozent der Anteile an der Mercedes-Benz AG beteiligt.2. BASF ist chinesisch oder totDer größte Chemiepark Europas, die BASF-Anlagen in Ludwigshafen, sind unrettbar unrentabel. Aufgrund staatlicher Regulierung und gewerkschaftlicher Lohndominanz sind diese Anlagen, die der Herstellung von Basischemikalien wie Ammoniak und Methanol dienen, durch kein Kostensenkungsprogramm mehr in den grünen Bereich zu drehen, sagt der Finanzvorstand.

Deshalb halten bei BASF der Vorstand und der Aufsichtsrat an der zehn Milliarden Anlage im südchinesischen Zhanjiang fest, die im Prinzip eine Spiegelung des Chemieparks von Ludwigshafen ist. Deutschlands traditionsreicher Chemiekonzern möchte im größten Chemiemarkt der Welt mit echten Produktionsarbeitern für echte Kunden vor Ort sein. Diese Anlage wird noch in Betrieb sein, wenn Donald Trump längst das Weiße Haus verlassen hat.3. Internationale Konzerne halten China die TreueTrump träumt davon, sich von seinem drittwichtigsten Handelspartner (Handelsvolumen von 583 Milliarden US-Dollar) zu entkoppeln. Die Bosse der amerikanischen Star-Unternehmen wie Apple, NVIDIA und Tesla wollen ihre Geschäfte mit China intensivieren.Am Sonntag startete in Peking das China Development Forum – eine staatlich organisierte Konferenz zur Anwerbung globaler Investoren. Mit dabei: Apple-CEO Tim Cook. Er zeigte sich begeistert und lobte das chinesische KI-Modell DeepSeek als „exzellent“. In Shanghai begann zwei Tage später Apples Entwicklerkonferenz – eine Verbeugung auch vor der chinesischen Führung.

Alleine im vergangenen Jahr besuchte Cook China mindestens dreimal und betonte, dass Apple ohne seine chinesischen Partner „nicht das leisten könnte, was es tut“. Sein aktueller Besuch erfolgt maßgeblich vor dem Hintergrund rückläufiger Umsätze vor Ort – im vergangenen Jahr gingen die Auslieferungen von Apple in China um 17 Prozent auf 42,9 Millionen Geräte im Land zurück. 4. Die USA isolieren sich, neue Handelsblöcke entstehenIn dem Maße, wie Trump seine internationalen Partner vor den Kopf stößt, gewinnt die Brics-Gruppe an Einfluss. Ihre ersten Mitglieder waren Brasilien, Russland, Indien, China und Südafrika. Mittlerweile gehören auch Ägypten, Äthiopien, Indonesien, der Iran und die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate dazu.Damit repräsentieren die Brics mehr als ein Drittel der Weltwirtschaft und die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung. Sie streben danach, in den globalen Institutionen ein Gegengewicht zum Westen zu bilden. Der Vorsitz der G20 etwa ging kürzlich von einem Brics-Mitglied, Brasilien, auf ein anderes, Südafrika, über. Globalisierung, aber anders.5. Auch Afrika setzt auf FreihandelDie 2019 gegründete AfCFTA – African Continental Free Trade Area – ist die nach Mitgliedsländern größte Freihandelszone der Welt. Eines ihrer Ziele ist die Abschaffung der Zölle auf Waren, die zwischen den afrikanischen Staaten gehandelt werden. Bis heute haben 54 Länder das entsprechende Abkommen unterzeichnet. Freihandelszonen Afrika

Fazit: Das Schlimmste an der Globalisierung ist, nicht an ihr beteiligt zu sein. Von den globalen Investmentbanken dürfte man mehr Realitätssinn und ein höheres Maß an Selbstreflexion erwarten. Politiker und Wirtschaftsführer sollten nicht alles glauben, auch nicht alles, was ein US-Präsident erzählt. From Global Poverty to Exclusion and Despair: Reversing the Tide of War and Globalization

We are at the juncture of the most serious crisis in modern history. An unfolding New World Order is destroying sovereign countries through acts of war and “regime change”. In turn, large sectors of the world population are impoverished through the concurrent imposition of deadly macro-economic reforms. This New World Order feeds on human poverty and the destruction of the environment, generates social apartheid, encourages racism and ethnic strife and undermines the rights of women. In the wake of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, in the largest display of military might since the Second World War, the US has embarked upon a military adventure which threatens the future of humanity. War is presented as a peace-making undertaking. The justification for these US-led wars is the “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) with a view to instilling (Trump-style) Western “democracy” worldwide. Global warfare sustains the neoliberal agenda. War and globalization are intricately related. What we are dealing with is an imperial project broadly serving global economic and financial interests including Wall Street, the Military Industrial Complex, Big Oil, the Biotech conglomerates, Big Pharma, The Global Narcotics Economy, the Media Conglomerates and the Information and Communication Technology Giants. Also, September 11, 2001 followed by the invasion of Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, also marks the official launch of the so-called “global war on terrorism” which has served as a justification for US-NATO-led wars and interventions in the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia.

One of America’s longest-standing traditions is that it welcomes all. Chances are most US students can quickly recite the words they were taught in school that appear at the base of the Statue of Liberty: „Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.“ Let’s set aside that people from every geographical location that have immigrated to the US have faced hostility; whether from Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa or the Middle East, those „huddled masses“ faced racism and more as they sought to establish a life in America. Yet, the myth that they would find open doors and the corresponding open hand of friendship sustained them. Does such a myth endure? In other words, has the open hand of friendship been replaced with the closed fist of fury?
