Is the 12-day Israel-Iran war really over – and who gained what?

A Trump-brokered ceasefire is in place for now. But what really happened – and did any side emerge stronger from the conflict?

Since Sunday, Israel and Iran have lurched from escalating war to fragile ceasefire. A truce seems to be holding, and what US President Donald Trump called “The 12 Day War” between Israel and Iran seems to be over – for now.
Meanwhile, Trump, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iran’s leaders have all claimed that the pause in the conflict happened on their terms.

The U.S.-Israeli War of Aggression Against Iran

In a rare interview following her firing by Yale, blacklisted Iranian scholar Helyeh Doutaghi discusses the U.S.-Israeli agenda and how Iran will confront the possibility of a wider war.
Jeremy Scahill Jun 24, 2025
It has been ten days since Israel launched an unprovoked campaign of sustained bombing against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Hundreds of Iranian civilians have been killed as Israel assassinated dozens of military and intelligence leaders, including commanders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as nuclear scientists and other technical experts. In some cases, these assassinations have been conducted in crowded residential buildings. Israel has also attacked medical sites, ambulances, and civilian neighborhoods, intensifying its attacks on Tehran on Monday. Estimates range from 400 to 900 Iranians killed and well over 3,000 injured. Iran’s Red Crescent and regional civil defense organizations estimate that more than 40,000 people have been displaced since the bombing began.

The real reasons for the US-Israeli war on Iran, explained

In its war on Iran, the US empire seeks to impose hegemony in West Asia (Middle East), destroy Axis of Resistance, colonize Palestine, overturn Iranian Revolution, preserve petrodollar, divide BRICS
Ben Norton Jun 19, 2025
The United States and Israel are jointly waging war on Iran, but why? What are their real goals?
What the US empire would like to accomplish is the following:
Maintain US hegemony in West Asia (aka the Middle East)
Destroy the anti-colonial Axis of Resistance, making possible the total colonization of Palestine
Prevent Iran from ever developing nuclear capabilities
Overthrow or at least weaken Iran’s independent, revolutionary government
Scare other countries in the region that may seek to move away from the US and the dollar (especially the Gulf monarchies)
Preserve the petrodollar system, ensuring global demand for the US dollar
Destabilize BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, divide the Global South, and disrupt the multipolar project
Break up the Iran-Russia-China partnership, with the ultimate goal of isolating Beijing
That said, it is of course by no means guaranteed that these goals will be achieved.

The US, Great Britain and France at War with Israel against Iran

CANADIAN INTERNET PLATFORM
By Manlio Dinucci Global Research, June 23, 2025
On 16 June, President Trump announced that he would not be signing any joint statement on Israel and Iran at the G7 Summit in Canada.
The following day, 17 June, he signed the “G7 leaders’ statement on recent developments between Israel and Iran”. This official text was agreed by the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Union.
“We, the G7 leaders, reaffirm our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we affirm that Israel has the right to defend itself. We reaffirm our support for Israel’s security. We also affirm the importance of protecting civilians. Iran is the main source of regional instability and terrorism.
We have always made it clear that Iran can never possess nuclear weapons. We call for the resolution of the Iranian crisis to lead to broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza. We will remain vigilant about the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate with like-minded partners to safeguard market stability.”
Immediately afterwards, Trump presented himself as a “mediator” between Israel and Iran. He officially reiterated that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.” He also demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender.“

Rare Earth Game Behind the Conflict between Israel and Iran

The Israel-Iran conflict escalates as U.S. considers intervention, with rare earths and geopolitical strategy at the heart of the turmoil.
The conflict between Israel and Iran has been going on for many days since it began on June 13. The conflict has now evolved into a bombardment mode, with Israeli fighter jets firing missiles into Iran and Iran firing missiles into Israel.
In other words, the Israel-Iran war has evolved into a war of attrition. According to the latest news, US President Trump is ready to order an attack on Iran. The US intervention in the war does not change the nature of the war of attrition.
Why? The purpose of the United States‘ intervention in the war is obviously to overthrow the Islamic regime in Iran.

Israel cannot dictate the future of the Middle East | David Hearst | MEE Opinion 25.06.2025
David Hearst, editor-in-chief of Middle East Eye, says Israel’s blitz on Iran has collapsed into a strategic defeat. In 12 days, none of Israel’s war aims were achieved. Trump claimed Iran’s nuclear programme had been obliterated, but US intelligence quickly contradicted him. Iran’s core infrastructure survived, and key materials were moved before the strikes. Iran may have already built deeper facilities elsewhere. Israel also failed to destroy Iran’s missile arsenal. After Trump declared a ceasefire, Iran launched new waves of attacks, hitting Beersheba and strategic sites across Israel. The damage was greater than anything Hamas or Hezbollah had inflicted. Hearst says Iran did not need to win outright. It only needed to keep fighting. Its missile strikes pinned Israeli civilians in shelters, drained missile defences, and exposed Israel’s limits. The quick victory Netanyahu sought never came. Iran’s ability to stand firm has shifted the balance. He argues this was never about ending a nuclear weapons programme. It was a clash between two worldviews: one that insists Israel must dominate the region, and one that resists occupation. Hearst concludes that Netanyahu’s long project to destroy Iran may have gone too far. Israel has exposed its population to a new kind of war and gained little in return. The result is not dominance, but danger. Israelis have suddenly discovered that bombing hospitals is wrong

This is awkward…
Deeply distressing scenes are coming out of Tel Aviv as Israel’s second city starts to closely resemble Gaza. The hypersonic missiles have arrived and all the fantasies of Iran running low on missiles seem a tiny bit delusional.
Unfortunately, we don’t do journalism in the west so we shared Israel’s delusions with you as fact. We wanted you to believe this will be one of those straightforward Middle Eastern wars that always work out so well… like you are a fucking goldfish. Sadly, things are not going so well…
Iran has unveiled giant invisible space missiles that rain down multiple smaller missiles at hypersonic speed, and those primitive desert dwellers weren’t supposed to be capable of this sort of thing! What the fuck is happening?

Assessing the US / Israel regime change plan for Iran

Comparisons from similar campaigns in the region
The Anti Empire Project Jun 20, 2025
US naval assets are moving in. US bases within striking distance of Iran are being evacuated. Trump has signaled his willingness to ridicule his biggest supporters and contradict his own intelligence director to do Israel’s bidding. All of this adds up to: it is extremely likely that the US will very soon be attacking Iran on Israel’s behalf. The objective of the war is the removal of the Iranian government and its replacement by either a chaotic, perpetual civil war situation (chaos) or a pliant collaborator regime that will allow Israel to keep genociding with impunity (the main priority of the Western elite is genocide now).

Figure 2 Irans Largest Oil and Natural Gas Fields Source ETA
In the White House, regime change in Iran is seen as tempting, due to Iran’s huge regional economic and geopolitical importance. Connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea, the Strait of Hormuz, is one of the world’s mostimportant oil chokepoints. Flows through the Strait make up over one-quarter of global seaborne traded oil. In addition, one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade transits the Strait annually. It is Iran’s insurance.
Iran is also the OPEC’s fourth-largest crude oil producer and the world’s third-largest dry natural gas producer. Most importantly, it holds some of the world’s largest deposits of proved oil and natural gas reserves. It is these lucrative resources that have paced the West’s external interventions in the country for a century (Figure 2).

Michel Chossudovsky confirms with foresight in his December 2006 presentation:
“Iran is the next phase of this war. This is not a rhetorical question, it has been confirmed by military documents and press reports. (…)
In this particular case and it’s also an important landmark, Israel is slated to play a direct role in the bombing campaign so that we are evolving from an Anglo-American military operation –which is based on the integration of American and British interests in the oil industry as well as in the military industrial complex— to the participation of Israel directly in a military operation directed against Iran.
I’m not suggesting that the bombing will necessarily take place or when it will take place.
But it is part of the process of military planning and at this stage the military Alliance is in a state of Readiness and Israel is slated to play a major role in this military operation.

Israel Attacks Iran – Consequences? The Turning of the Tables

Peter Koenig
[This article by Peter Koenig was first published on Global Research. You may read it here.]
It all started in the early morning hours of 13 June 2025, with what Israel calls “Operation Rising Lion”. Israel’s Air Force launched dozens of air strikes against Iran, targeting its nuclear [energy] program. According to BBC, in Iran’s own words, this is the biggest assault on Iran’s territory since the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988.
Iran has no nuclear weapons program, as confirmed multiple times by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), belonging to the UN system. However, after a 2024 inspection, the IAEA apparently reported enrichment to about 60%. This is not enough to make an atomic bomb, requiring at least 90%.
But for Israel which has a nuclear warheads arsenal of several hundred, this justified an unprecedented attack on Iran – a clear declaration of war. Israel’s nuclear bomb stockpile is outside of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Agreement, all quietly tolerated by the west led by the United States.
Only with the explicit backing of the White House, Israel would dare such an assault on a country with a military power that could by far exceed that of Israel.
As these lines are written, the situation on the Israel-Iran war is constantly changing.
The latest state of affairs is that within the last 48 hours the tables have turned by 180 degrees.
