The Dnieper River dam collapse this week caused a major humanitarian crisis in southern Ukraine, but who, if anyone, was behind the breach is still shrouded in mystery.
Both Ukrainian and Russian officials are pointing the finger at each other, accusing the opposing side in the war of carrying out an attack on the Nova Kakhovka dam to further their aims on the battlefield
The dam, which contained a reservoir as large as the Great Salt Lake in Utah, was breached on Tuesday, flooding thousands of homes across dozens of settlements, leading to mass evacuations and killing at least 14 people.
There has been no independent, compelling evidence against either side for carrying out the attack on the dam in the Kherson region. And the roots of finger-pointing over a fatal blow to the dam stretch back to last fall, when both Ukraine and Russia accused each other of planning to carry out the attack.
Another theory is the dam, which supplies water to both Ukrainian and Russian-occupied regions, may have collapsed on its own due to wartime neglect and stress from frequent strikes in the region.
The U.S. is investigating the incident but has not reached a formal conclusion yet.
“People are continuing to assess how this could have happened,” Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said at a Thursday briefing. “At this point, it’s all speculation.”
Here are the three theories that have been floated thus far.
The case against Russia
The alleged motivation for Russia carrying out the destruction of the dam is to halt the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which began last weekend and is underway in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region and southern Donetsk region.
The flood has effectively created a new shoreline and a dramatic mass of water between the western and eastern banks of the Dnieper River, complicating any Ukrainian landing on the opposite side.
Ukraine has formally accused Russian soldiers of planting explosives with the assistance of military engineers.
Russia has occupied the area around the Kakhovka dam for more than a year, with the facility effectively under Moscow’s control. Theoretically, that means it would be relatively easy for Russian saboteurs to plant explosives inside the dam.
Ukraine’s Security Service, the nation’s domestic intelligence agency, claimed it had direct evidence of Russian plotting to destroy the dam, releasing what it said was an intercepted phone call between Moscow’s agents.
In the audio — which has not been independently verified by The Hill — a Russian official says a “sabotage group is there,” allegedly referring to the dam, and the goal was to destroy it to “scare people
Elina Beketova, a Democracy fellow with the Center for European Policy Analysis, said she believed the audio was authentic. Beketova told The Hill there were “multiple reasons to suspect Russia” and very little reason to suspect Ukraine.
“Ukraine is protecting its territory, and Ukrainians are trying to fix all the problems right now,” said Beketova, a Ukrainian citizen. “That’s our people who are suffering.”
Danielle Johnson, a senior Ukraine analyst at the humanitarian analysis nonprofit Assessment Capacities Project, said the evidence points to Moscow because it has a “long record” of carrying out attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure to cow the people into submission.
While the destruction of a major dam would mark an escalation in this campaign, it would clearly not be unprecedented,” Johnson wrote in an analysis.
The case against Ukraine
The motivation for Ukraine in destroying the dam is less clear, but Kyiv has been accused of carrying out nefarious attacks before.
The U.S. believes Ukrainians are behind the drone strike attack on the Kremlin last month, along with blowing up the Nord Stream pipelines last year and bombing prominent Russian officials inside Russian territory.
Russia formally accused Ukraine of bombarding the dam on Tuesday morning with missiles in order to prevent future, potential Russian attacks in the southern Kherson region.
Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya argued Ukraine was likely behind the attack because Kyiv began testing the possibility last year.
“As early as last year, leaders of Ukrainian military publicly claimed [to be] ready to blast the dam in order to obtain some military advantage,” Nebenzya said, according to Russian state-run media TASS.

The case for neglect
It’s also possible that neither side carried out the attack and the dam collapsed due to neglect during wartime and from the degradation of the structure from missile strikes and bombings in the area.
Bridges and overpasses around the dam have been attacked repeatedly. During a Russian retreat from the Kherson region last year, the facility also took damage. Russian soldiers have frequently blown up bridges and laid mines in hasty retreats.
And Russia has accused Ukrainian strikes of hitting the dam.
The theory is also plausible because neither side stands to gain much from destroying the hydroelectric power plant on the wide Dnieper River, which separates the Ukrainian- and Russian-occupied parts of the city.
The dam supplies water to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, which is not at a direct risk from the flooding but certainly is threatened by the collapse. Damage to the nuclear plant could trigger an even worse environmental catastrophe.
Kakhovka also supplies water to the Crimean Peninsula coveted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who illegally annexed the region in 2014. It’s unclear why Russia would compromise Crimea, though Moscow could have backup stations for water supply to the peninsula’s residents.
Conversely, a natural collapse scenario appears less likely if the dam was constructed to withstand a nuclear missile attack. And The New York Times, citing U.S. officials, reported that satellite images did show an explosion at the dam when it collapsed, although it’s unclear what caused it.
But neither side would gain much from the torrent of water unleashed this week, leaving tens of thousands of residents on both sides without potable water. Russian fortifications have also been washed away from the flooding.
Michael Kofman, the director of Russian studies at the Center for Naval Analyses, also said the dam collapse is unlikely to change the dynamics on the battlefield.
Though he conceded the flood would destroy the initial Russian lines of entrenchment across the Dnieper River, Kofman argued the breach is unlikely to “substantially” shorten Russian lines to strategically benefit Ukrainian troops. He additionally cast doubt that Ukrainian forces had planned to stage a cross-river attack in Kherson and said the flooding did little to bolster Russian defenses.
“This is an ecological and humanitarian catastrophe, with long term economic implications for the region, for which Russia is responsible,” Kofman tweeted, “but I’m skeptical that Ukraine’s military prospects in the short term will be negatively affected in a meaningful way.”

Russian MFA Spox Maria #Zakharova: On October 21, 2022, Russia’s Ambassador to the UN sent a letter to the UN Secretary General regarding the Kiev regime’s plans to destroy the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric dam in Kherson province.
Russia had warned of potential catastrophic flooding and loss of life (see October 21, 2022 advisory to UNSC). In recent months, Russia conducted the evacuation of people on the East side of the Dnieper.

The cause of the blasts is not yet clear, although Ukraine warned late last year that Russian forces had mined the dam as they retreated from Kherson and Ukraine’s state hydroelectric company said the Kakhova plant was destroyed by an explosion in the engine room – suggesting it was attacked from within rather than by external strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday told a Vatican peace envoy that the destruction of the Kakhovka dam would have ‘dire consequences’ for people and nature.
‘This crime carries enormous threats and will have dire consequences for people’s lives and the environment,’ he told Italian cardinal Matteo Zuppi as the two met in Kyiv, according to a presidency statement.

The investigators have also established the details of the truck and its owner, registered in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, and begun searching his place of residence, it added.
Russian officials said that the blast, which occurred shortly after 6 am local time, caused a partial collapse of the road on the vehicle section. It also triggered a blaze on a freight train on the parallel rail section, with seven fuel tanks catching fire.
The Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, referred to the incident as an „emergency“ in a statement on Saturday, without assessing who was behind it.
„The president directed the prime minister to form a government commission to find out the causes of the incident and eliminate the consequences as soon as possible,“ Peskov said, according to Russian state media.
Peskov said „there are still no forecasts“ for restoring the Crimean Bridge, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.
Soon after the incident, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukraine’s president, wrote in a Twitter post on Saturday that „Crimea, the bridge, the beginning … Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled,“ but he did not directly claim Ukrainian responsibility.
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded, saying „The Kiev regime’s reaction towards destruction of civilian infrastructure is a testament to its terrorist nature.“
Symbolic incident
Chinese observers said this incident will be another symbolic moment of the Russia- Ukraine conflict, as it will fuel the already tense situation. „The bridge is important enough for Moscow as it repeatedly issued warnings against attacking the bridge and drew a ‚red line‘ on it. If the blast is confirmed as a deliberate attack, it will be a test for Russia whether it can safeguard its ‚red line.‘ For some people, Russia has no choice but to exert strong countermeasures to show the outside world that it has the determination to draw and protect its ‚red line,’“ Cui Heng from the Center for Russian Studies of East China Normal University, told the Global Times on Saturday.
Both the Crimean Bridge damage and the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines are moves tinted with terrorism, said Cui, noting that the use of such moves is an ominous sign that the relevant parties are breaking the rules and ignoring war ethics, which fuels the spiraling escalation of the conflict.
„An undisguised terrorist war is being waged against us. Moreover, the long-announced terrorist attack on the Crimean Bridge is no longer just a challenge, it is a declaration of war without rules,“ Oleg Morozov, a member of the Russian parliament, told the RIA news agency. „If we remain silent in response and do not give an adequate response, then such attacks will multiply,“ he added.
The bridge has become a hot button location between two countries since the Russia-Ukraine crisis began. In August, explosions rang out over the bridge, although with no apparent damage done. Ukrainian officials have vowed to attack the Crimean Bridge on numerous occasions during the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Dmytro Marchenko said that the bridge would be the number one target for the defenders of Ukraine after receiving the promised Western weapons, media reported in August.
The US has also been supporting Ukraine for attacking Crimea. A senior US official told NatSec Daily that the US supports strikes on Crimea if Ukraine deems them necessary, US media outlet Politico reported in August.
„In the short term, the conflict will escalate, and hostility between both countries is reaching a limit. From a broader perspective, once the sabotage of basic infrastructure becomes normal during this conflict, the whole world faces rising security risks,“ according to Cui.
This incident occurred less than a month after the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines burst on September 26, draining Russian gas into the Baltic Sea off the coast of Denmark and Sweden. Sweden’s Security Service said on Thursday that a crime scene investigation of the incident found evidence of detonations, strengthening suspicions of „gross sabotage,“ Reuters reported.
Lingering impact
Observers see the damage of the 19-kilometer bridge across the Kerch Strait, opened by President Vladimir Putin in 2018, as a deliberate attack on Russian’s morale. In addition, the attack on the bridge will have a direct impact on Russia’s ability to supply forces in the Kherson and Nikolayevsk regions, said Cui.
However, although the bridge plays a key role in bringing fuel, equipment and ammunition to Russian units fighting in southern Ukraine, Wang believed the impact of the damage to the bridge on the conflict is rather limited.
„Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has its official primary headquarters and facilities in Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula. But logistic support and transportation of troops for Russia’s ground force fighting in eastern Ukraine is not from the peninsula. Moreover, the bridge is just one of the channels connecting Crimea with mainland Russia. It can also be substituted by ferries and other ways,“ said Wang.
Hours after the incident, local authorities in Crimea said they will organize a ferry service between the Russian mainland and the peninsula, BBC reported.
Li Ziguo, a senior research fellow with the China Institute of International Studies, told the Global Times that Russia could also use this incident to further mobilize its people and show them the dangers Russia faces during the conflict. „It could also be used by Moscow to win over people’s support for its military actions,“ said Li.

Prof. Michel Chossudovsky (PMC): We should remember the press conference at the White House on February 7, 2022 at which the US president and Germany’s chancellor publicly expressed their intention to blow up the Nord Stream. Chancellor Scholz who was on an official visit to the United States, fully endorsed President Biden’s stated intent to blow up the Nordstream gas pipeline, “if Russian tanks enter Ukraine”.
Olaf Scholz was fully aware that this act of sabotage of the Nord Stream had been planned well in advance by the US Administration, to the detriment of more than 400 million Europeans.
DV: Do you have unequivocal evidence that Chancellor Scholz was involved?

Did you receive assurances from Chancellor Scholz today that Germany will, in fact, pull the plug on this project if Russia invades Ukraine? And did you discuss what the definition of “invasion” could be?

PMC: Scholz’s answer is unequivocal. He endorsed Biden’s decision to bomb Nord Stream, while avoiding to address the substance of the Reuter’s journalist question: i.e “within the control of Germany” of which he is the head of government.
DV: So from these words of the German chancellor you conclude that Germany knew?
PMC: Of course he knew, which does not mean that people in Germany and the EU knew.
His statement is unequivocal. He supported Biden’s decision to bomb Nord Stream. Scholz’s statement at the press conference confirms that this was a joint decision. In fact it was an “Act of Treason”, by the German Chancellor, which had also been endorsed by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
DV: Do you think that this kind of evidence would be sufficient reason for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to deal with this matter.
PMC: International law is explicit in this regard. The Nord Stream pipelines which were the object of the attack are located within the (maritime) territorial jurisdiction of four member states of the European Union. In international law, “Territorial Integrity” extends to “properties” located within the territorial waters of the Nation State. The deliberate destruction of said “properties” within a country’s territorial waters by or on behalf of a foreign state actor constitutes an act of war.
Based on International Law, the International Criminal Court (ICC) –not to mention the European Court of Justice (ECJ)– should have been able to confirm that it was an act of war. But the ICC is corrupt. In Washington, Biden made it public when he said: “We will do it and we have a plan to do it”. And there was nothing secret about Biden’s public declaration.
I recall the act of aggression against the Former Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), in 1999. Your country was the object of a NATO act of war, and it was an illegal and criminal act based on fabricated evidence, allegedly with a view to coming to the rescue of Kosovo’s Albanian population. From a legal standpoint, extensive crimes were committed by NATO acting collectively against a sovereign country.
Here we have a different situation. An Act of War against the E.U., which points to crimes against humanity. It also triggers a deep-seated crisis within the Atlantic Alliance, which I might describe as follows: A NATO country, namely the United States of America — through an illegal act of sabotage has (from a legal standpoint) attacked its European allies most of which are NATO member states.
It is ironic, that following the attack on Nord Stream in September 2022, none of the EU-NATO member states raised the issue that this was an attack by a NATO Member State against all EU-NATO member states.
We might recall the issue of Article 5 of the Atlantic Alliance’ Washington Treaty, which was used in October 2001 as a pretext to justify the invasion of Afghanistan, namely an attack by a foreign power against one or more NATO member states is an attack against all member states of the Atlantic Alliance under the doctrine of collective security.
The whole thing was a big lie. There was no evidence that Afghanistan had attacked America on September 11, 2001.
In regards to the U.S bombing of Nord Stream, Article 5 obviously does not apply because the “foreign power”, namely the U.S. is a NATO member state. What we are dealing with is a U.S. sponsored Act of War against the EU, bearing in mind that most EU countries are member states of NATO.
“It’s NATO against NATO”. This raises a precedent: A NATO member state is at war against a collective of European NATO member states.
The question that should be raised is whether NATO still exists as an “alliance” when the U.S exerting its sovereign rule over the European Union, declares an act of war against the EU-NATO member states which are “allies of America”.
DV: How do you view the European economy today?
PMC. We are also dealing with an act of economic warfare against the EU.
The EU economy which has relied on cheap energy from Russia is in a shambles, marked by disruptions in the entire fabric of industrial production (manufacturing), transportation and commodity trade.
A string of corporate bankruptcies resulting in lay-offs and unemployment is unfolding across the European Union. Small and medium sized enterprises are slated to be wiped off the economic landscape.
DV: American natural gas in Europe is now seven times more expensive and suppliers from the USA are asking the Europeans for 20 annual contracts to guarantee regularity of supply in return?
PMC: In the long run, it won’t work. In a global economy, if you want to buy gas, you will look for the best price. You can purchase Russian gas via a third country. e.g. India.

In recent developments, German Prosecutor General Peter Frank confirmed “there is no evidence to blame Russia for the destruction of the Nord Stream gas pipelines”:
“It currently has not been proven (…) The investigation is ongoing (…) We are currently evaluating all this forensically. [The suspicion] that there had been a foreign sabotage act [in this case], has so far not been substantiated”, he said during the interview with Die Welt.
No evidence of foreign sabotage of an act which has created social havoc and hardship in the European Union, with rising energy prices? People are freezing, unable to pay their heating bills. The EU economy which relied on cheap energy from Russia is in shambles.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz refused to comment on the investigation.
If it wasn’t Russia, who was behind it?
Unequivocally, this act of sabotage had been ordered by the President of the United States. The following statement was made exactly one year ago:

“Sabotage is the most likely cause of leaks in two Baltic Sea gas pipelines between Russia and Europe, European leaders have said, after seismologists reported explosions around the Nord Stream pipelines.”
According to European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen “the leaks” into the Baltic sea were due to “sabotage”:
“Any deliberate disruption of active European energy infrastructure is unacceptable and will lead to the strongest possible response,” she warned, and urged and investigation to get full clarity on the “events and why”.
Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen described them as “deliberate acts”, adding: “We are not talking about an accident.”
Von Der Leyen did not elaborate as to who might have been behind these “deliberate acts” of sabotage.

In a televised news February 7, 2022 interview the President of the United States acknowledged that the United States would act against Nord Stream if required. This statement was made 3 weeks prior to the Russian invasion:

The evidence suggests that this terrorist attack had been contemplated by the Biden Adminstration prior to the Russian invasion. Was it carried out by the CIA?. “We will be able to do that” said Joe Biden.

Nord Stream which originates in Russia passes through the territorial waters of four EU member states including Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Permission was provided and approved by the parliaments of those countries prior to construction.
Moreover, the Nord Stream pipelines also required the approval of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, which were part of the consultative process prior to construction.

The journalist, in his self-published article in February, claimed that US Navy divers planted explosive devices beneath Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in June 2022 and three months later in September, the explosives destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines. Hersh also talks about new US intelligence reports suggesting pro-Ukrainian groups were behind the bombing of the pipelines last year. The report by the New York Times comes a month after investigative journalist Seymour Hersh said the US was responsible for bombing the Nord Stream pipeline.

Beinahe textidentisch hatten zwei deutsche Medien am 7. März berichtet: Eine pro-ukrainisches Gruppe aus sechs Personen, darunter vier Taucher, soll eine Jacht in einem Hafen gemietet und anschließend den Sprengstoff an beiden Nord-Stream-Pipelines angebracht haben. „Was für ein Schmarren! Was erzählen die einem da?“ Das war der erste Gedanke, den Kai dazu hatte, wie er dem eXXpress mitteilt. Mit seinem vollständigen Namen möchte der Tauch-Experte nicht zitiert werden, er ist auch in der Politik tätig. Die Ostsee und das Tauchen kennt er wie kein Zweiter: Sein Vater war Kampfschwimmer und hat später in der Ostsee eine Tauchschule gegründet. Kai erlernte dort das Tauchen im Alter von drei Jahren.
Zehn Stunden unter dem Meer, dazu noch eine Dekompressionskammer
70 Meter tief tauchen, dabei Sprengstoff transportieren, sich dort unten orientieren, dann wieder auftauchen: Für Laien mag das einfach klingen, doch in Wahrheit ist jeder Bestandteil dieses Sabotage-Akts eine Herkulesaufgabe. „Das müssen militärische Profis gewesen sein, die eine andere Ausbildung haben als etwa Sporttaucher“, sagt Kai.
Allein der Tauchvorgang muss mindestens zehn Stunden gedauert haben, wie er berechnet hat. Das liege am langen Auftauchen. „Das ist das Schwierigste. Je tiefer Sie tauchen, desto höher wird der Wasserdruck und desto mehr drücken sich die Lungenflügel zusammen. Diesen Effekt müssen Sie beim Auftauchen umkehren – und deshalb alle fünf Meter anhalten, um ihre Lunge zu schonen.“ Die Lunge muss sich an den geringer werdenden Druck gewöhnen. Taucht man zu schnell auf, platzen die Lungenbläschen, es droht eine Lungenembolie – „die Taucherkrankheit“.
Wenn die Lunge überdehnt und Luft in den Blutkreislauf gepresst wird, kann das zu Lähmungen oder sogar zum Tod führen. „Deshalb geht jeder Profi-Taucher ohne eine Dekompressionskammer nirgendwohin.“ In so einem luftdichten, druckfesten Behälter werden verunglückte Taucher sofort untergebracht. Das sechsköpfige Sabotage-Team hätte eine solche Kammer ebenfalls bei sich haben müssen. „Darin muss man dann Stunden oder Tage verbringen. Ich selbst war schon einmal drei Tage drin. Das ist wirklich kein Kindergeburtstag“, sagt Kai.
Keine Chance in der Ostsee unentdeckt zu bleiben
Dieser lange Tauchvorgang muss bei beiden Pipelines stattgefunden haben. Schlicht ein Rätsel ist, wie das Team samt Jacht so lange unentdeckt geblieben ist. „Sechs NATO-Staaten überwachen die gesamte Ostsee. Wenn sich dort jemand bei einer so wichtigen Infrastruktur länger aufhält, kommt spätestens nach drei Stunden ein Küstenboot oder ein Hubschrauber vorbei. Man bleibt nicht unentdeckt.“
Die Attentäter müssen darüber hinaus eine registrierte Jacht gemietet haben – unregistriert sind nur die kleinsten Schiffe. Doch diese Jacht hätte allerhand mitnehmen müssen: Zum 450 Kilogramm schweren Sprengstoff und zur Dekompressionskammer kommen noch Pressluftflaschen hinzu, in die Luft mit einem Kompressor gefüllt wird. Es gilt: Je tiefer im Meer man ist, desto schneller verbraucht man diese Druckluftflaschen.
Entsprechender Gasvorrat hätte ebenfalls dabei sein müssen. „In der Tiefe muss man anderes Atemgas einsetzen, ein sogenanntes Mischgas“, sagt Kai. Zu den beiden Gasen Sauerstoff und Stickstoff kommt noch Helium hinzu. Die Mischung muss genau stimmen.
Die Ostsee: Man sieht nichts, zahlreiche Strömungen können einen sofort mitreißen
Darüber hinaus ist die Ostsee ein ganz besonderes Meer: „Sie ist ein trübes Gewässer, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes“, sagt Kai. „An den besten Tagen reicht Ihre Sicht zwei, drei Meter weit. Meistens sehen Sie nicht einmal Ihre Hand, schon gar nicht in der Tiefe.“ Als Binnenmeer hat die Ostsee darüber hinaus „Strömungen ohne Ende – Über-, Unter und Gegenströmungen. Das ist ganz anders als in der Nordsee oder auf dem Atlantik. Man muss genau wissen, wo man schwimmt.“ Aus eigener Erfahrung weiß der Tauch-Experte zu berichten: „Wenn man am Meeresboden von einer Strömung erfasst wird, dann wird man 10, 20, teils sogar 100 Meter weggerissen. Man kann sich dann nur flach machen, mitziehen lassen und hoffen, dass alles schnell aufhört.“
Endgültig an einen James-Bond-Film fühlt sich der Tauchexperte erinnert, wenn es um den Transport des Sprengstoffs geht. „Wie bringen Sie diese Menge in die Tiefe? Wenn Sie den Sprengstoff in der Ostsee hineinkippen, garantiere ich Ihnen: Sie würden ihn nie mehr finden.“ Man bräuchte für den Transport eine Seilwinde oder ähnliches. „Nur dafür benötigt man wieder eine Windung. Allerdings ankert kein Schiff in dieser Tiefe“ Auf dem Meeresgrund sieht man nichts. Man hat auch kein GPS. „In 70 Metern Tiefe findet man nicht einmal so einfach die Röhren. Die müsste man zunächst wohl freischaufeln.“
Die Variante des Pulitzerpreis-Trägers klingt noch glaubhafter
Für den Tauch-Experten steht fest: Das Sabotage-Team hätte das alles an beiden Pipelines nicht durchführen können, schon gar nicht unentdeckt. Wie alles tatsächlich vor sich gegangen ist, darüber kann Kai auch nur rätseln. Er hat aber eine Hypothese: Dass das alles am Rande einer NATO-Übung im vergangenen Jahr geschehen ist, wie Pulitzerpreis-Träger Seymour Hersh zuvor berichtet hatte, hält er für glaubhafter. Denn möglicherweise wurde dabei die Dauer-Beobachtung des Meeres ausgeschaltet. „Die Hersh-Geschichte ist aber auch etwas schräg. Ich persönlich würde auf Mini-U-Boote tippen. Kampfschiffe wären dann in der Nähe stationiert, in denen alle nötige Technik der Welt ist, auch um Leben zu retten.“
Das sei aber keine Experten-Meinung – „weil ich nie ein U-Boot benützt habe.“ Wie auch immer: Eine abgewandelte Story von Hersh erscheint dem Tauchexperten immer noch glaubhafter, als die jüngste Version, die einige deutsche Medien präsentiert haben.

Er enthüllt in seinem Substack, wie es das Ergebnis war, dass die Washingtoner Regierung im Juni unter dem Deckmantel einer NATO genehmigte, C4-Sprengstoffe auf den Pipelines zu platzieren Übung in der Ostsee und setzen sie dann mit einem Signal von einer auf die Oberfläche abgeworfenen Sonarboje in Gang. Hersh diskutiert die Diskussion über die Sabotage bei der UN, den Niedergang seiner Art von Journalismus in den Mainstream-Medien und mehr!
Seymour Myron „Sy“ Hersh ist investigativer Journalist und politischer Autor. Er gewann 1970 einen Pulitzer-Preis für internationale Berichterstattung für die Aufdeckung des Massakers von My Lai und der Vertuschung. In der New York Times berichtete er über den Watergate-Skandal, die geheime US-Bombardierung Kambodschas und das Programm der CIA zur Inlandsspionage. Er hat elf Bücher geschrieben und außerdem einen Rekord von fünf George Polk Awards und zwei National Magazine Awards gewonnen.

Aber das ist es, was ich im Grunde genommen – das ist die einzige Erklärung, die ich dafür habe.
Denn es gab keinen Luftangriff.

hier kommen all diese Luftschutzsirenen und die Presse schreibt darüber.

Weil wir alles überwachen, konnten wir herausfinden, wer es getan hat.
Sie könnten den Typ fragen, der den Geheimdienst leitet – für den Direktor des Nationalen Geheimdienstes – der Zugang zu allem hat.
Alles: verdeckt, nicht verdeckt, Signale.
Die CIA hat eine Abteilung namens Directorate of Intelligence, die großartige Arbeit leistet.
Und eine andere niedrigere Ebene, wenn Sie eine Gruppe im Feld haben, wie es sie in Norwegen gab, damals gab es eine Spezialeinheit in der CIA, die – und eine Agentur, die sogar lokale Telefongespräche überwacht, um sicherzustellen, dass sie immer noch verdeckt sind, sie werden nicht ausgesetzt.

„Nun, natürlich werden sie es herunterspielen wollen, weil sie offensichtlich wissen, was passiert ist, und nicht zugeben können, dass sie es wissen.
Der ganze Zweck der – Sie müssen es historisch wissen, seit den Kennedy-Tagen gab es in unseren Tagen der Eindämmung – das war die große Theorie der Eindämmung – seit den Kennedy-Tagen eine enorme Menge an Sorgen Amerikas im Kalten Krieg – die böse Ausbreitung des Kommunismus oder die Eindämmung Ausbreitung des bösen Kommunismus.
Und so machten sie sich schon immer Sorgen um die enormen Reserven an russischem Gas und Öl, die sie schon damals nach Westeuropa verkauften.
Und die Pipelines fingen gerade erst an, nach Europa zu gehen, und es kam eine Menge Zeug durch die Ukraine.
Und es gab viele Sorgen – immer wieder formuliert –, dass Russland sein Gas, billiges Gas und Öl für den Verkauf an Deutschland und Europa als Waffe missbraucht, um damit etwas Druck auszuüben.
Und vielleicht hat es die Macht der NATO geschwächt, den Zusammenhalt gemindert.
Westeuropa hat kein Gas oder Öl, sie beziehen Rohstoffe von anderswo.“

„In Stalingrad, dem letzten Stalingrad, verloren die Russen alle vier Stunden 2.400 Tote und Verwundete, und sie schlugen Deutschland, damals die Nazis.

Es war voller Gas, 750 Meilen Methangas, deshalb gab es so einen großen Gasausbruch.
Es hatte noch nicht angefangen zu liefern, es war nur eingefroren.
Er hatte die – oder die Chance, es aufzutauen.
Ich denke, Biden hat beschlossen, ihm das wegzunehmen.
Und ich denke, das wird letztendlich das große Problem für Biden sein, besonders vielleicht im nächsten Winter, wenn es ein schlechter Winter ist.“

„Die Politik der Zerstörung der Gasleitung, sei es ein Kriegsakt oder was auch immer, aber es war ein Schlag ins Gesicht Europas.
Zu sagen, wissen Sie: „Wenn Sie nicht mit mir und der Ukraine spielen wollen“, sagt der Präsident, „ist es mir egal, was dort passiert.“
„Es ist mir egal, ob es schwieriger wird, Ihre Leute wohlhabend und warm zu halten“, im Grunde hat er das getan.

Ich meine, wir hatten tatsächlich eine Geschichte, die die New York Times vor ungefähr zwei oder drei Jahren zwei Tage lang auf Seite 1 lief, als der Afghanistankrieg noch im Gange war.
Und es gab Gelegenheiten, wo die Aghans einen Amerikaner erschossen, weil sie sehr wütend auf das waren, was dort passierte.
Die afghanische Armee war mit unserer totalen Kontrolle über die meisten Dinge dort nicht zufrieden.
Und so heißt es in einer der Geschichten, dass afghanische Soldaten – unter Berufung auf anonyme Quellen, die von anonymen Quellen sprechen – dass der Kreml Kopfgelder an afghanische Soldaten zahlt, die einen amerikanischen GI im Dienst in Afghanistan getötet haben.
Und diese Geschichte verschwand, weil es ein kompletter Betrug war.

Und Westmoreland, der den Krieg leitete.
Ich stecke zwei Finger in das Auge eines amtierenden Präsidenten, Richard Nixon.
Und in vielen Ländern der Welt wäre ich dafür in einem Gulag gelandet.

Nord-Stream-Terror: Putin besteht auf „objektiv korrekte Ermittlungen“

Milliardenschaden und Versorgungsengpässe: Der Terroranschlag auf die Gas-Pipelines Nord Stream 1 und 2 ist einer der größten Kriminalfälle Europas. Dennoch liefern Behörden und Politik seit mehr als fünf Monaten keine offiziellen Ermittlungsergebnisse. Der Kreml fordert nun eine “objektive und korrekte Ermittlung”.
Bei den Ermittlungen im Krimi um die Gas-Pipelines Nord Stream 1 und 2 gibt es auch 169 Tage – also 5 Monate und 16 Tage – später keine offiziellen Ergebnisse. Laut dem Pulitzer-Preisträger Seymour Hersh sollen US-Taucher den Sprengstoff während einer NATO-Übung angebracht haben. Danach haben die Norweger die Ladung gezündet. Dann behaupteten deutsche Medien, dass eine sechsköpfige Mannschaft den Anschlag ausgeübt haben soll. Die Spur führe in die Ukraine. Eine kleine Segelyacht namens “Andromeda” soll die Sprengsätze dabei transportiert haben.
Kreml-Chef Wladimir Putin fordert nun eine “objektive und korrekte internationale Untersuchung” der Sabotage. “Die einseitigen Darstellungen, die aktuell zu hören sind, tragen wenig zur Aufklärung bei”, meinte dazu der Sekretär des russischen Sicherheitsrates Nikolaj Patruschew.
„Moskau besteht auf objektive Untersuchung“
“Ich betone, dass man Anschuldigungen, die nicht durch die Ergebnisse einer unparteiischen Untersuchung gestützt werden, nicht trauen kann. Deshalb besteht Moskau auf einer objektiven Untersuchung unter Beteiligung Russlands und anderer interessierter Länder. Andernfalls erklären einseitige subjektive Versionen des Terroranschlags nichts”, erklärte er am Montag gegenüber der Wochenzeitung “Argumenty i Fakty”.
USA und Großbritannien laut Patruschew an dem Anschlag beteiligt
Die Idee, dass die USA und Großbritannien nicht in den Terroranschlag verwickelt waren, sind seiner Meinung nach “offensichtlich von dem Kalkül geleitet, dass es dem Publikum an der Fähigkeit fehlt, logisch zu denken, einschließlich der Methode der Leugnung”. Und fährt fort: “Es wird behauptet, dass der Sabotageakt von einer Gruppe ukrainischer Terroristen ausgeführt wurde. Dabei muss man sich jedoch die Frage stellen, ob eine solche Gruppe überhaupt existiert und ob sie zu solchen Taten fähig ist. Für derartige Aktivitäten benötigt man gut ausgebildete und ausgerüstete Spezialeinheiten”.
Seiner Ansicht nach verfügen die USA und England über solche Fähigkeiten. Auch andere NATO-Länder setzen Kampfschwimmer für Sabotageaufgaben ein, aber nur “mit Zustimmung und Unterstützung des Landes, das die Hauptagenda der NATO bestimmt”, erklärte der Beamte.
Andromeda: Das soll die Segeljacht der Nord-Stream-Terroristen sein
Deutsche Medien wollen jetzt wissen, auf welchem Schiff die Sprengsätze für die Nord-Stream-Explosionen transportiert wurden. Beim Schiff handelt es sich um die „Andromeda“, eine Jacht vom Typ Bavaria Cruiser 50 mit einer Länge von rund 15 Metern.
Es gibt weitere Details zum Anschlag auf die Ostsee-Pipeline Nord Stream, die am 26. September des Vorjahres gesprengt wurde. Laut Recherchen des Magazins “Spiegel” handelt es sich bei der Jacht um die „Andromeda“. Das Schiff vom Typ Bavaria Cruiser 50 hat eine Länge von rund 15 Metern.
Die sechs Verdächtigen sollen das Schiff offenbar mithilfe von gefälschten Papieren über eine Charterfirma auf Rügen gemietet haben. Zwei der Personen sollen angeblich Ukrainer sein. Eine Verbindung zu staatlichen Stellen in der Ukraine ließ sich bisher aber nicht herstellen.
Laut “Spiegel” hat die Karlsruher Bundesanwaltschaft bestätigt, dass sie vom 18. bis zum 20. Jänner im Zusammenhang mit einer verdächtigen Anmietung ein Schiff durchsucht habe.
Bei der Rekonstruktion des Kurses der “Andromeda” ermittelten Fahnder des Bundeskriminalamts nach “Spiegel”-Informationen auch am Jachthafen von Wiek im Norden der Insel Rügen. Dort soll das Schiff Anfang September angelegt haben, nachdem es von Rostock-Warnemünde aus losgefahren war.
Allerdings: Wie der eXXpress gestern ausführte, ist die von deutschen Medien verbreitete Darstellung des Anschlags auf Nord Stream voller Unstimmigkeiten.

US-Marinetaucher sollen im vergangenen Juni bei einer vom Weißen Haus angeordneten verdeckten Operation Sprengsätze an den Gaspipelines Nord Stream 1 und 2 angebracht haben. Das behauptet der legendäre Investigativ-Journalist Seymour Hersh (85) (eXXpress berichtete). Eine nun geteilte Animation soll die genaue Timeline des Anschlags preisgeben. Bereits vor dem Beginn des Ukraine-Krieges sollen amerikanische Politiker demnach mit einem Angriff auf die Gaspipelines gedroht haben. Im März 2022 – mehr als 190 Tage vor der Explosion – soll laut Hersh der Nationale Sicherheitsberater der USA, Jake Sullivan, einige Mitglieder nach Norwegen geschickt haben, um mit dem norwegischen Geheimdienst die Sprengung zu planen.
Minen während Militärübung platziert
Am 2. Juni 2022 – 116 Tage vor der Sprengung – erreichte ein US-Kriegsschiff in Stockholm für die Baltops 22. Dabei handelt es sich um ein multinationales Manöver, das seit 1971 jährlich in der Ostsee stattfindet. Währendder 13-tägigen Übung sollen Taucherteams der NATO Minen um die Insel Bornholm verlegt haben und die neueste Unterwassertechnologie verwendet haben, damit die Minen gefunden werden können.
Hersh meinte in seinem Artikel, dass am Tag der Explosion ein norwegisches Flugzeug während eines anscheinenden Überwachungsflugs eine Sonoboje abgeworfen hatte. Einige Stunden später sei der C4-Sprengstoff explodiert. Bis heute konnte der Vorfall nicht aufgeklärt werden. Auf den Journalisten Hersh prasselte nach der Veröffentlichung seiner Recherche heftige Kritik ein.

Nord Stream Anschlag: Auch deutsche Ermittler finden Spuren in die Ukraine
Kurz nach Bekanntwerden von Geheimdienst-Infos aus den USA wollen nun auch deutschen Medien von wichtigen Erfolgen der Ermittlungsbehörden in Deutschland erfahren haben. Wie der Nord-Stream-Anschlag über die Bühne gegangen ist, soll nachrekonstruiert worden sein. Auch diese Spur führt nach Kiew.
Eine Jacht, sechs Attentäter und eine Spur in die Ukraine: Aus diesen Zutaten besteht die neue Enthüllungsstory über die Urheber des Sabotage-Angriffs auf die Nord-Stream-Pipelines. Doch näher besehen weist die von deutschen Medien verbreitete Erzählung zahlreiche Unstimmigkeiten auf.
Es ist die mittlerweile dritte Version über den Tathergang, die nun der Öffentlichkeit aufgetischt wurde. Zunächst verdächtigte Moskau die Briten, Drahtzieher hinter dem Spionage-Krimi zu sein. Dann ließ Investigativ-Reporter Seymour Hersh (85) die Bombe platzen: US-Marinetaucher hätten den Anschlag im Rahmen einer verdeckten CIA-Operation ausgeführt. Am Dienstag legten deutsche Medien Version Nummer drei vor: Es soll eine sechsköpfige Mannschaft gewesen sein. Die Spur weise in die Ukraine – der eXXpress berichtete.
Doch gerade diese Erklärung, die fast zeitgleich mit Enthüllungen der „New York Times“ erschienen ist, weist zahlreiche Ungereimtheiten auf. Das muss keineswegs bedeuten, dass die Story erfunden oder gänzlich falsch ist – mehr dazu weiter unten. Nur dass alles genauso stattgefunden hat und ermittelt wurde, erscheint zweifelhaft, und zwar aus mehreren Gründen.
Profis, die sich wie Amateure verhalten
Zunächst dürften die sechs Attentäter anscheinend sehr dilettantisch vorgegangen sein. Sie haben eine Jacht gemietet, wie in der „Zeit“ und beinahe textidentisch auf der Tagesschau-Website nachzulesen ist: „Die Jacht sei dem Eigentümer im Anschluss in ungereinigtem Zustand zurückgegeben worden.“ Nun, wer heimlich ein Spionage-Attentat dieses Ausmaßes durchführt, wird penibel darauf achten, alle Spuren zu verwischen. Dass das Schiff in „ungereinigtem Zustand“ übergeben worden ist, erscheint als skurril – und das ist noch höflich formuliert.
Dann ist von einem merkwürdigen Sprengstoff-Fund die Rede: „Auf dem Tisch in der Kabine haben die Ermittler den Recherchen zufolge Spuren von Sprengstoff nachweisen können.“ Das klingt fast so, als wäre der für das Attentat verwendete Sprengstoff von dem Team am Schiff gemixt worden. Er hätte zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon längst fertig vorbereitet sein müssen. Was Sprengstoff auf dem Tisch zu suchen hat, ist rätselhaft.
Auch sonst können die Akteure schwerlich Profis gewesen sein. „Die Attentäter nutzten professionell gefälschte Reisepässe, die unter anderem für die Anmietung des Bootes eingesetzt worden sein sollen.“ Normalerweise wollen Attentäter gar keine Spuren hinterlassen, auch nicht gefälschte. Warum alle oder zumindest mehr als einer der Attentäter seinen Reisepass vorgelegt hat, ist unerklärlich. Im Übrigen hätte auch jemand anderer vorausgeschickt werden können, um die Jacht zu mieten.
Der merkwürdige Wissensstand der Ermittler
Merkwürdig ist darüber hinaus der vermeintliche Wissensstand der Ermittler. „Die Nationalität der Täter ist offenbar unklar“, wie im Artikel zwei Mal steht. Man kenne auch nicht die Identität der sechs Personen, verrät ein ARD-Reporter. Eines will man über das Team aber dennoch wissen: „Es soll sich um fünf Männer und eine Frau gehandelt haben. Demnach bestand die Gruppe aus einem Kapitän, zwei Tauchern, zwei Tauchassistenten und einer Ärztin, die den Sprengstoff zu den Tatorten transportiert und dort platziert haben sollen.“
Woher die Ermittlungsbehörden auf einmal diese Informationen haben sollen, ist ein Rätsel. Zwar kennen sie nicht Identität und Nationalität der vermeintlichen Täter, wohl aber ihren Beruf, und das sogar sehr genau. Allein schon wie sie zwischen Tauchern und Tauchassistenten unterscheiden wollen, wäre interessant zu erfahren. Ebenso gut hätten an Bord ein Taucher und 3 Tauchassistenten sein können – oder umgekehrt.
Damit erscheint die polnische Firma im Artikel fast wie ein Fremdkörper. Man versteht nicht recht, was ihre Rolle in dem Ganzen ist. Gleichzeitig ist dieses Unternehmen, das angeblich zwei Ukrainern gehört, die einzige Spur nach Kiew. Dort weist man übrigens alle Vorwürfe bereits entschieden zurück – der eXXpress berichtete.
Im Gegensatz zu Version eins und zwei lässt somit diese neue Story die Frage nach den Drahtziehern näher besehen völlig im Dunkeln. Mit diesem Informationsstand kommt eigentlich jede Nation als Organisator des Sabotage-Akts in Frage.
Direkter Zusammenhang mit Anschlag ist unklar
Misstrauisch stimmt auch, wie plötzlich man zu so vermeintlich bahnbrechenden Ermittlungsergebnissen gelangt sein will. Als Pulitzer-Preis-Träger Seymour Hersh mit seinen Enthüllungen an die Öffentlichkeit getreten ist, wurde er dafür scharf kritisiert und als unglaubwürdig dargestellt. Doch mit einer Gegen-Erzählung wartete Anfang Februar noch niemand auf. Ein Satz wie: „Wir haben andere Hinweise, und die gehen in eine andere Richtung“, fiel nicht. Im Übrigen hat erst vor wenigen Tagen die deutsche Bundesregierung der UNO ausgerichtet, keinerlei relevante Erkenntnisse zu dem Attentat vorweisen zu können.
Das alles soll nicht heißen, dass eine Geschichte erfunden worden ist. Das Team auf der Jacht, das kann es durchaus geben. Aber näher besehen fehlt jeder Beweis für einen kausalen Zusammenhang zum Nord-Stream-Anschlag. Den Sprengstoff auf dem Schiff, den man erst im Jänner gefunden hat, könnte ebensogut für einen anderen Zweck verwendet worden sein. Bei den vermeintlichen Attentätern könnte es sich ebensogut um Mitglieder eines anderen Geheimdiensts handeln – denn von Geheimdiensten wimmelt es in der Region nur so.
Eine deutsche Quelle, die sich einmal beim Militärischen Abschirmdienst (MAD) beworben hat, berichtet dem eXXpress: „Parow mit der Marinetechnikschule und Rostock, mit Fliegerhorst und dem Flottenstützpunkt, sind regelrechte Agentennester“. Sämtliche Geheimdienste seien „scharf darauf“.
Fazit: Menschen waren auf einer Jacht. Doch ausgerechnet zu den zwei entscheidenden Bausteinen des Spionage-Krimis fehlt in dieser Erzählung eine nachgewiesene Verbindung: zum Anfang – den Auftraggebern – und zum Ende – der Sprengung.
Dieser Einschätzung des österreichischen Internetportals EXPRESS kann man nur zustimmen. Insbesondere die Geschichte mit der Yacht von der aus der Anschlag erfolgt sein soll, ist doch weit hergeholt, Auch die Vermutung, dass die Ukraine hinter dem Sabotageakt steckt ist eher unwahrscheinlich. Hier sind sich Putin und Selensky ausnahmsweise einig. Also wer war es? Bei der Antwort hilft die Frage CUI BONO? Wem nützt’s ? Wer profitiert davon? Das sind einzig und allein die USA und Norwegen. Das nun in Deutschland und der EU fehlende Gas aus den Russischen Pipelines kompensiert Norwegen durch die Lieferung von teurem Flüssiggas. Auch die USA schicken Spezialschiffe in deutsche Gas Terminals. Die USA haben aber noch ain anderes wichtigeres Interesse: Wie immer im Handeln Uncle Sams spielen geostrategische und geopolitische Interessen eine entscheidende Rolle. Es gilt Russland zu schwächen und klein zu halten. In den folgenden Artikeln findest du alles, was du über Nord Stream wissen musst. Insbesondere der Artikel von Seymour Hersh, dem berühmten unabhängigen Journalisten (Vietnam Berichterstattung) ist lesenswert, zeigt er doch, dass der Sabotageakt von den USA geplant und durchgeführt wurde.

How much advance knowledge did Chancellor Scholz have about the blow-up of Nord Stream 2 on 26 September 2022?
Notwithstanding some lacking precisions in Seymour Hersh’s article – see this – during a joint Press Conference by President Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the White House on February 7, 2022, about two weeks before Russia’s Special Action on Ukraine, Joe Biden said these precise words, “If Russia invades, there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2, we will bring an end to it.”
When a reporter asked how exactly he intended to do it, given that the project was within the control of Germany, Biden just said, “I promise we will be able to do it.”
Mr. Scholz, standing next to Biden, answered the same question, saying something like, “we are in this together”. (See Michel Chossudovsky’s detailed analysis and video interview)
This – “we are in this together” – would indicate that they talked about and agreed before on how to stop Nord Stream 2. If you were a German businessman in manufacturing, who depends on cheap Russian gas to remain internationally competitive, or a simple German or European citizen, whose winter heating depends on Russian gas, wouldn’t these words alone already indicate an utmost betrayal by Scholz of the German and European people?
Europe depends about 40% on Russian gas. The percentage in Germany in 2021 may be in excess of 50%.
On 22 February 2022, two days before the Russian military action on Ukraine, Chancellor Scholz called off the completion of Nord Stream 2 which at that time was scheduled to be ready for Russian gas deliveries within about three months. See this.

Victoria Nuland: “FxxK the EU.” Nord Stream Is “A Hunk of Metal at the Bottom of the Sea”

In recent developments, Germany’s Prosecutor General Peter Frank confirmed “there is no evidence to blame Russia for the destruction of the Nord Stream gas pipelines”:
“It currently has not been proven (…) The investigation is ongoing (…) We are currently evaluating all this forensically. [The suspicion] that there had been a foreign sabotage act [in this case], has so far not been substantiated”, he said during the interview with Die Welt.
If it’s not Russia, Who Did It?
“No evidence of foreign sabotage” of an act which has created social havoc and hardship in the European Union, with rising energy prices? People are freezing, unable to pay their heating bills. This crisis which emanates from Washington has been conducive to a process of impoverishment all over Europe from a never-ending surge in energy prices.
The Evidence is There: It is Being Ignored by Germany’s Prosecutor Peter Frank as well as by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
It had been ordered by the president of the United States. Joe Biden. They know it! They are liars.
Victoria Nuland: “Fxxk the EU” Again
President Biden’s decision to order the sabotage of Nord Stream (see below) is now confirmed by a recent January 2023 declaration by Victoria Nuland to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
“Senator Cruz, like you I am and I think the administration is very gratified to know that Nord Stream 2 is now as you like to say, a hunk of metal at the bottom of the sea.”

At a Senate hearing, top US diplomat Victoria Nuland celebrated the Nord Stream 2 pipeline bombing:

But what most worries me about the entire story is the unanimous complicity of the mainstream media in ignoring the completely obvious.
The media line, parroted here relentlessly by the BBC and corporate media, was that the Russians had probably themselves blown up the pipeline on which they had expended such great resources and three decades of intense diplomatic activity, and which was to be the key to Russia’s single most valuable source of income for the next 40 years.
This was always quite literally incredible. You would have to be deranged to believe it.

Sy Hersh and the Way We Live Now. “The Propaganda Apparatus that Manipulates and Controls our Society”
Coverage of the sabotage of the Nordstream pipelines helped Murray realize something important about how the Big Lie works.
It is a clear indicator of the disappearance of freedom from our so-called Western democracies that Sy Hersh, arguably the greatest living journalist, cannot get this monumental revelation on the front of The Washington Post or The New York Times, but has to self-publish on the net.
Hersh tells the story of the U.S. destruction of the Nordstream pipelines in forensic detail, giving dates, times, method and military units involved. He also outlines the importance of the Norwegian armed forces working alongside the U.S. Navy in the operation.
One point Sy does not much stress, but it is worth saying more about, is that Norway and the U.S. are of course the two countries that have benefitted financially, to an enormous degree, from blowing up the pipeline.
Not only have both gained huge export surpluses from the jump in gas prices, Norway has directly replaced Russian gas to the tune of some $40 billion per year. From 2023 the United States will appear in that list in second place behind Norway, following the opening in the last two months of two new liquefied natural gas terminals in Germany, built to replace Russian gas with U.S. and Qatari supplies.
So Russia lost out massively financially from the destruction of Nordstream and who benefited? The U.S. and Norway, the two countries who blew up the pipeline.
But of course, this war is nothing to do with money or hydrocarbons and is all about freedom and democracy….
To return to Hersh’s account, particularly interesting are the series of decisions taken to avoid classification of the operation in various ways which would require it to be reported to Congress. In terms of United States history, this ought to be a big deal.
For the executive branch to commit what is an act of war without the approval of the legislature is fundamentally unconstitutional. But that is one of those quaint remnants of democracy that the neoliberal elite consensus can quietly sidestep nowadays.
Hersh sets out the well-known background in compelling detail, including that, from U.S. President Joe Biden down, the Americans effectively announced what they were going to do, openly.
